Alicante Airport Information

Alicante airport is situated 9 kilometres southwest of the capital, in the  municipality of Elche, in one of the most dynamic and up and coming business and  economic zones on the Mediterranean coast. The essential role played by tourism is reflected in the percentage of international passenger flights that this airport handles and which make up eighty percent of the total. The main countries of origin of these passengers are the United Kingdom, Germany and Holland.

Furthermore, scheduled domestic traffic has increased in recent years. The destinations most in demand are Madrid, Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca. There are an increasing number of low cost flights with cheap airfares.  To adapt airport capacity to the growing air traffic demands, significant infrastructure improvements are being carried out, particularly in the passenger  terminal control area.

In 2007, Alicante Airport handled 9,120,819 passengers, 79,750 flight  operations and 4,531 tonnes of cargo.

Alicante airport sees the most growth in Spain, thanks to low-cost lines and English tourism

The positive evolution of foreign tourism (mostly from the UK) during the first six months of 2008, and the consolidation of low-cost airline  companies, have enabled El Altet to become the airport with the highest  percentage of passenger growth among the eight airports considered by AENA  (Spanish Airports and Air Navigation) as first category. In the midst of an  economic crisis, El Altet closed June with a total of almost 4.6 million passengers, representing 11.5% more than the same period in the previous year.

The provincial airport greatly surpassed the growth percentages of Barajas, Palma de Mallorca, Malaga, Gran Canaria and Barcelona

In 2010 Alicante will practically open a new airport, with a central terminal in which all of passenger’s movements will be managed and, in addition,  it will enable the current buildings (T-1 and T-2) to specialise in servicing low-cost airlines.

Low-cost airline companies hope to have almost an entire terminal  dedicated to their exclusive use, given that the basis of their success lie in the reduction of the time that the plane is grounded. The construction of the  T-2 had already been proposed to facilitate passenger movement and serve as a  possible location for "low-cost" airlines.
